"My decision to pursue a legal career was driven purely by a passion for youth issues and a sincere desire to engage with the community through direct service and policy work. The focus of my professional work has always been on serving low-income and at-promise youth, and I am wholly committed to working in this field after graduating law school. My internship at Legal Services for Children reaffirmed this commitment, and allowed me to gain experience in new areas of children's law.
As an intern at Legal Services for Children, I worked in the areas of guardianship, education, dependency, and immigration. I was given cases that had complicating factors, and as a result also gained specialized experience and knowledge of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) and the McKinney Vento Act. I performed home visits with clients, represented clients in court, and negotiated with school districts and opposing counsel. I was also able to attend public interest trainings, which included working with LGBTQ youth, trauma-informed child interviewing, immigration policy, and cultural humility." Melissa Adamson
